Initially funded through grant applications drafted by students, Wolfville’s Centre for Rural Sustainability now supports the development and implementation of applied sustainability projects in Nova Scotia’s rural communities.
The Acadia Community Sustainable Farm is the brainchild of students who dreamed about food. Currently in its first year, the farm has five families working plots, and student gardeners provide the campus cafeteria with fresh, organic produce. The farm also brings in local experts and offers workshops on themes that range from vermicomposting to strategies for growing tomatoes in the Annapolis Valley.

Twelve years ahead of schedule, Brandon U has achieved Manitoba’s 2020 greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals as a result of several energy conservation initiatives. Most notable is the new intelligent building automation system, which has reduced heating and ventilation inefficiencies. It adjusts for times when buildings are unoccupied, while also detecting and adjusting for increases in carbon dioxide levels when they are in use outside regular hours.

“My Climate, Your Climate, Our Change” was the theme for the day-long interdisciplinary dialogue on climate change organized by the Environmental Studies 2008 graduating class. The students raised over $4000, which allowed them to attract Dr. Calvin DeWitt, the University of Wisconsin-Madison professor and leader in Christian environmental stewardship, as their feature speaker.

Organized by Environmental Studies students and Micah Action/Awareness Student Society (MASS) members, the Green Chapel environmental church service takes place every October. The event aims to raise environmental awareness within a Christian context. Last year’s service featured the reading of various “odes to species.”
Other great student opportunities
Student learning and contribution are not limited to the local area. Each spring, 12 to 15 students travel to Honduras to participate in a project that helps bring running water to a remote village. The project operates in conjunction with the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee. Students receive credit for their month of volunteering.

The “Winter Ecology” course dispels the myth that field trips only take place during the summer. The labs all occur in the field, and include the frost-pockets lab, which is done at midnight in mid-winter and offers hot chocolate as a post-lab warm-up. On a weekend field trip to Manitoulin Island, students learn about animal tracking, small mammal trapping, twig identification and temperature profiles in the snow. They also build a quinzhee (snow hut) and then stay in it overnight.

The Cooperative Freshwater Ecology Unit, a dynamic research group that focuses on restoration ecology of aquatic systems stressed by contaminants, climate change or invasive species, offers students several research opportunities. Current projects include the reintroduction of endangered aurora trout and development of a biomonitoring network using benthic invertebrates.

A two-week field course at McGill’s Gault Nature Reserve in Mont St. Hilaire gives students a chance to explore the largest remaining tract of old-growth forest on the St. Lawrence Plain. Geared towards those with an interest in natural history and developing basic flora-identification skills, the course teaches common names of ferns, fern allies, trees, shrubs, woody vines and wildflowers. Eco-events that everyone marks on their calendars
Every spring and fall, the student-run group MacGreen organizes a Cootes Clean-Up to rid Cootes Paradise, a nature sanctuary just north of campus, of garbage. After about 70 volunteers have collected all the garbage and recyclables they can, the group heads back for a barbeque. Swap-o-Rama, a MacGreen event penciled in for April, reduces consumerism by urging students and residents to put unwanted items at their curbs and to check out what their neighbours have on offer.

Along with organizing annual events, MacGreen also orchestrates the Dish It Out kit of reusable dishes that is rented out for special events. Students who wanted to establish a battery recycling program founded the McMaster University Battery Recycling Organization (MacBRO). They are currently planning an awareness campaign and writing a program policy.

A group of six students is living with low-flow showerheads, compact-fluorescent light bulbs, a programmable thermostat, and meters for gas, hydro and water in Nipissing’s Ecovillage, which opened its doors in the fall of 2008. The brainchild of a first-year student, the project involves two units in the university’s townhouse-style residence. For the 2007-2008 school year, the other townhouse acted as a control to collect baseline data for later comparisons. Students who participate in the project will offer seminars on what they learned about sustainable living.

Royal Roads’ first “living building,” the Robert Bateman Art and Environmental Education Centre, is set to open its doors in 2010. UofM’s administration has decided to do something about all the methane being released by the nearby Brady Road Landfill: burn it. The landfill gas will be burned in the university’s district heating system. A deal is being made with the city to use the landfill gas to generate electricity.

Students join professors, the public and representatives of Indigenous groups at the Northern Sustainable Livelihoods Workshops. With their focus on how to meet basic needs and supply environmental services to the Northern Prairies, these workshops feature training and discussion on topics such as housing, energy, climate change and waste management. A working group of UofO’s Public Interest Research Group, Campus Vert/Green Campus is striving to make its club name a reality on campus. Their work includes a composting and campus garden project, efforts towards a university bus pass and reusable-cup campaigns. Every May, the school presents Restoration Institute, a symposium that brings together researchers, resource managers, community leaders, policy makers and students to learn and share knowledge on innovative techniques and theories of restoration. Following two days of workshops and speakers, participants are offered two field courses. In 2008, the institute examined alien invasive species management, and offered courses on marine systems restoration, and ecological restoration principles and concepts.

Though their program is only five years old, Environmental Studies students are already filling the campus with green groups and activities. Organizations established include the Environmental Studies Club and a local chapter of Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots. Students also took part in the Fifth Annual Athgo Global Forum at the University of California, Los Angeles, which focused on youth leadership and the challenges of global warming.

BSc and BES students alike must enroll in what students fondly call “Field Camp.”
Over the course of this field measurement and mapping techniques course, students spend an intensive week at the university’s field site near North Bay, Ontario, where they engage in hands-on study. Back on campus, the following week is spent analyzing and interpreting data collected in the field.

Several Geography courses provide hands-on experience in real-world situations right in the community of Nanaimo. An Urban and Regional Planning class developed land-use proposals for Gabriola Island for the Islands Trust. Students in an “Urban Growth Management” course assisted the residents of South Wellington respond to an official community plan review with community meetings and a website.
