Animal Pharm
HEALTH CANADA HAS fallen behind the US Food and Drug Administration in its monitoring of antibiotics in the meat industry. As of April 5, 2012, new FDA regulations restrict the use of an important class of antibiotics on food-producing animals. Known as cephalosporins, these pharmaceuticals are commonly used to treat pneumonia in humans, and the FDA will now require that only veterinarians administer them to animals.
Moreover, the FDA is planning to follow the European Union’s lead and eventually ban all antimicrobials used to promote animal growth.
