Business and Fundraising Manager (One Year)

We are a small team with a mighty mandate: to publish Alternatives Journal, Canada’s environmental magazine, and help raise the level of environmental discourse in Canada through our journal, events and websites. We are a registered charity.
We are looking for a team player to solidify what we have, and help chart the course to where we want to be. Basically, we want you to help shape our organization’s future.
You will be in charge of fundraising, so you’ll need to have grant-writing experience. Good contacts within the environment sector are an asset. Aided by our Audience Development Manager and Circulation Manager, you will run the business side of Alternatives’ operations. You’ll be in charge of budgets, promotions, and online business operations. Knowledge of publishing, circulation, marketing and/or advertising is highly desirable.
This is a full-time position covering a one-year leave of absence. You’ll be based in our office in beautiful and vibrant Waterloo, Ontario, but will also need to attend events and meetings in Toronto as needed.

JOB DESCRIPTION
You will work in collaboration with Alternatives’ staff to:
- manage business operations of website and magazine, including ecommerce, marketing and publicity
- manage promotion and sales in tandem with circulation and audience development departments
- undertake and oversee related administrative responsibilities, such budgeting, overseeing progress in targets as defined in 5-year plan, funding report writing and managing interns who are assisting in this area
QUALIFICATIONS
- excellent verbal and written communication skills
- excellent networking skills
- a willingness and ability to initiate and maintain contact with clients and donors
- experience in grant writing, preferably with demonstrated success in major funding solicitation
- experience working in a team, as well as independently
- excellent organizational and time-management skills
- ability to juggle many tasks while maintaining a sense of humour
- familiarity with the non-profit sector, particularly the environmental community in Ontario and Canada
