Fifty years ago, development replaced colonialism as the global mission of the wealthy nations. Today, that mission looks like a failure. The rich and powerful still exploit the poor and weak, and the gap between advantaged and disadvantaged continues to grow. Human rights, democracy and environmental responsibility shine more often in words than in practice. And the promise of bringing everyone up to the wealthy nations’ standard of consumption seems impossible as well as dishonest. ...
