We welcome driven, enthusiastic contributors to help us create, market and distribute A\J in Canada and abroad, and to deliver our special events and education initiatives.

Volunteering

As a volunteer, you choose what you work on, and you’ll receive support from our experienced staff members along the way. Hours are flexible; generally volunteers contribute between 4 and 8 hours per week. Any time and skills you have to offer are greatly appreciated, and we’ll work with you to find the best fit where you’ll have the most tangible and meaningful impact. Work placements & internships

If you are in an educational program with a work placement requirement and would like to do yours at A\J, please email jobs @ alternativesjournal.ca. Work placements can be related to journalism, publishing, video production, events, marketing, publicity, web development or other areas.

We also welcome externally-funded internships and can work with you to develop those positions and applications. Paid internships that we develop interally are posted on our internships page

Editorial Assistant

Fact-checking is one of the most important, intense and rewarding editorial tasks that a magazine has. Other tasks might include research and short writing assignments, copy-editing the magazine, and helping to publish our online content.

Perfect for: Aspiring journalists with strong research, writing and editing skills, impeccable attention to detail – and an unrelenting drive to find the answer because if we can’t prove it, we can’t print it. 

 

 

Digital and/or Audio Archivist

Help get A\J’s 43 years of archives online and/or turn our podcasts into an interview archive.

PERFECT FOR: Someone computer-savvy with an interest in history and storytelling.

Education Guide

Help finalize our annual guide to environmental education programs across Canada and get it online.

PERFECT FOR: An excellent researcher with great attention to detail.

Graphics and Design

Bring your Photoshop, Illustrator, audio/visual and/or animation skills to A\J and help develop imagery for the magazine and website.

PERFECT FOR: A creative person with very strong design skills and who takes direction well.

Academic Outreach

Help bring our academic integration programs to academic institutions across Canada.

PERFECT FOR: Enthusiastic students or academic professionals with good relationship-building skills, who want to see A\J on campuses everywhere.

Web Development

Help keep A\J’s websites in top shape, improve AlternativesJournal.ca, and contribute to dynamic content.

PERFECT FOR: Someone who loves the web and has some knowledge of PHP, Javascript and HTML/CSS. Experience with Drupal is a plus.

Business

Help us track down advertisers and build business relationships.

PERFECT FOR: Someone with awareness of sustainable business trends, strong research and data management skills, and a professional phone manner.

Marketing/Outreach

We’re always looking for people to help us expand our reach and amplify our impacts. Help deliver social media messaging; promote the magazine, our online content, events and partners; and develop special promotional initiatives.

PERFECT FOR: Strong, creative communicators with solid writing and problem-solving skills; those with a business or publishing background and lots of drive.

Whatever works for you

From events and office assistance to totally new ideas and projects, we can find opportunities for you to gain experience in the environmental and publishing worlds based on your particular skills and interests.

PERFECT FOR: Anyone who doesn’t see a good fit above but is driven and interested in supporting A\J.

A\J is created in a satellite uWaterloo Faculty of Environment office in downtown Kitchener (195 King West – across from City Hall). A computer can be provided. Some positions may be done from other locations – just ask!
