The disruptive changes taking place in current social-ecological systems appear to be increasing both in magnitude and the frequency of their own complex interactions. From a worldwide perspective, they are collectively referred to as “global change.” Sustainability in this context means something entirely new: Complex social systems must possess capacities for adaptation, social innovation and creative transformation in order to be resilient in the face of both gradual and abrupt changes.
