Nunavut Multiple campuses Nunavut Arctic College Located in the pristine snowy areas of the Arctic, this college has five campuses dispersed across Nunavut, providing opportunities for all residents and visitors of the territory. The college specializes in adult education, and with Community Learning Centers located in all 25 communities of Nunavut, education can be brought to your home.
Yukon Multiple campuses Yukon College Yukon College has 13 campuses located across the territory. The main campus is just west of the Yukon River in Whitehorse. Additionally, the college works to create a diverse and cultural college for all.
British Columbia Burnaby British Columbia Institute of Technology Surrounded by mountains and rivers, and a 30-minute-drive from Vancouver, this university boasts an excellent location. It also advocates small class sizes, practical work and strong connections with industries. In fact, programs are developed in consultation with leading employers to position students at the forefront of latest developments in industry.
British Columbia Victoria Camosun College The two campuses of Camosun College are located on the traditional territories of the Lkwungen and WSÁNEĆ peoples, on the south part of Vancouver Island’s Saanich Penninsula. The college offers Indigenous programs, which focus on archaeology, health care, business leadership and Indigenous studies. The college prides itself on job-ready graduates through local business-training opportunities.
British Columbia North Vancouver Capilano University Capilano University, nestled in the beautiful North Shore Mountains, is still only a 20-minute-drive from downtown Vancouver. Groups that students can join include EarthWorks and the Environmental Justice Collective, which are focused on improving sustainability in the university and in communities.
British Columbia Cranbrook College of the Rockies College of the Rockies, located in the Kootenay Rocky Mountains, provides students with an opportunity to learn while also experiencing a unique and beautiful landscape. The college offers small class sizes and great support services.
British Columbia Multiple campuses Douglas College Mountains and islands surround this college, and unlike at larger institutions, Douglas College courses are taught entirely by instructors, not teaching assistants, so all students have the opportunity to learn from people with years of experience.
British Columbia Multiple campuses Kwantlen Polytechnic Univeristy As a polytechnic institute, KPU provides a career-focused experience that is designed with the input of real-world employers. KPU is also home to the Institute for Sustainable Horticulture, where scientists and some lucky students research key areas such as urban agriculture, integrated pest management and ecosystem sustainability to maintain BC’s position as a leader in sustainable horticulture research.
British Columbia Vancouver Langara College Langara College is located in South Vancouver, near mountains and the sea. The Environmental Studies Program is offered through the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies. Peace and Conflict Studies, Biology (Ecology, and Health Studies are other program options. The college aims to encompass sustainability into all areas of study as well as build sustainable partnerships with employers and alumni.
British Columbia Merritt Nicola Valley Institute of Technology Nicola Valley Institute of Technology is governed by Aboriginal communities and provides an education grounded in Indigenous knowledge. Students have the unique opportunity to experience various Aboriginal cultures while pursuing their program of choice.
British Columbia Comox North Island College North Island College’s vision includes respect for its unique natural setting amid stunning mountains and rivers. Small class sizes and hands-on experience guarantee greater interactions with instructors. This is all part of the college’s aim to fully prepare students for when they enter the work force.
British Columbia Terrace Northwest Community College Based in a rugged, mountainous landscape, Northwest Community College consists of nine campuses supplying the educational needs of 34 communities. NWCC is a recognized leader in Aboriginal education and provides an affordable and career-enriched education.
British Columbia Multiple campuses Okanagan College Okanagan College prides itself on being surrounded by a unique landscape, including the Osoyoos Desert. But the college takes none of this for granted, and LEED-certified buildings mean that students learn in a sustainable environment. Sustainability aims stretch even further, covering utility conservation, internal practices and a diversity working group.
British Columbia Victoria Royal Roads University Royal Roads University looks out across islands and the Pacific Ocean. The university is geared towards working professionals who are looking to improve their current position or change to a new career. Most programs are delivered through “blended learning” – a combination of short on-campus residencies and online learning, allowing individuals to balance work, life and their education.
British Columbia Castlegar Selkirk College Selkirk College is a leader in environmental sustainability and has numerous initiatives to improve the environment, including campaigns to reduce carbon emissions, priority parking for carpoolers and green infrastructure (such as LEED certification and solar panel installation.)
British Columbia Multiple campuses Simon Fraser University SFU offers exchange programs in more than 40 countries at both the undergraduate and graduate level. SFU is committed to becoming Canada’s leading engaged university by collaborating with the community to exchange knowledge and ideas on local issues. The CityStudio program provides an excellent example by giving students the opportunity to help develop sustainable projects in the city of Vancouver.
British Columbia Kamloops Thompson Rivers University Thompson Rivers University offers “Leadership in Environmental Sustainability.” This unique credential is completed alongside any program of study, and gives formal recognition to individuals for taking part in extracurricular activities related to every kind of sustainability – economic, cultural, social, creative and environmental.
British Columbia Langley Trinity Western University Trinity Western University is a Christian university with faith-based values. The University has 60 acres of ecological study area in which environmental studies students can do research.
British Columbia Multiple campuses University of British Columbia Located at the tip of Point Grey and surrounded on three sides by beaches, UBC challenges its students to think outside the box . UBC’s Beaty Biodiversity Centre also houses some of the best biodiversity researchers in the world, and a natural history collection of over two million species.
British Columbia Multiple campuses University of the Fraser Valley At University of the Fraser Valley, a new initiative, Students for Environmental Advocacy (SEA), provides a way for students to make their university a greener place through zero-waste events like dinners and movie screenings. The university also boasts small class sizes, averaging 22 students.
British Columbia Prince George University of Northern British Columbia UNBC allows students to study at on-campus facilities and outside at three forest stations. The small university is also known as Canada’s Green University, and leads the way to a more sustainable future through following their Green Strategy, developed in 2009.
British Columbia Victoria University of Victoria UVic has one of Canada’s largest co-operative education programs and truly acknowledges the value of practical experience. The university encourages field schools or placements, community service and research projects, and also houses many green initiatives to increase its sustainability.
British Columbia Nanaimo Vancouver Island University Beautiful mountains, forests, islands and the Pacific Ocean surround VIU. In addition to these local surroundings, the university recognizes the importance of working abroad. Therefore, overseas exchanges, field schools, internships, practica and project work are all offered.
Alberta Edmonton Concordia University College of Edmonton CUE is an intimate community within the busy urban centre of the city of Edmonton.The Highlands campus is tucked away in a quiet area overlooking the beautiful North Saskwatchewan River Valley, minutes from Downtown.
Alberta Grande Prarie Grande Prarie Regional College Located in northwestern Alberta, GPRC is committed to meeting the demands of industry through customized programming and by responding to its community’s needs. Affordable tuition and small class sizes make students feel comfortable and confident at Grande Prairie.
Alberta Fort McMurray Keyano College Keyano College is a Comprehensive Community Institution providing education and training within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
Alberta Edmonton The King’s University The King’s University provides a Christian Liberal arts education on a small campus with small class sizes.
Alberta Lloydminster Lakeland College Lakeland College is an interprovincial college, and aims to design and deliver programs to meet the needs of communities and industries. The college’s educational methods include face-to-face, blended and distance learning, therefore allowing options to all kinds of students.
Alberta Lethbridge Lethbridge College Lethbridge College offers career-focused programs, with an aim to make students desirable to employers when they finish. Applied research and innovation are central to this college.
Alberta Medicine Hat Medicine Hat College Medicine Hat College works with the community in business and offers practical experiences for its students. The college is in the process of installing solar energy technologies into their campus operations.
Alberta Calgary Mount Royal University Mount Royal provides students with quality teaching and small to medium class sizes. Experience has also taught Mount Royal the importance of preparing students for life after graduation. That means hands-on learning through work placements, practica and co-op education.
Alberta Olds Olds College Olds College is one of the largest agricultural college in Alberta and upholds the value of small class sizes, specialized training and applied research. The college has agricultural training facilities available, including greenhouses, botanical gardens, an indoor landscape pavilion, riding arenas and acres of farmland.
Alberta Lac la Biche Portage College Portage College consists of eight strategically located campuses. Practical experience is at the heart of this college, preparing students for their career path.
Alberta Red Deer Red Deer College Affordable tuition and medium class sizes are included at Red Deer College. The college also delves into applied and industry-led research.
Alberta Multiple campuses University of Alberta The University of Alberta is within the top five universities of Canada according to Quacquarelli Symonds ranking, and the top 100 in the world. At the university, the Co-Curricular Record (CCR) Pilot Project is designed to provide students with official recognition of on-campus volunteer work and involvement in campus life.
Alberta Calgary University of Calgary Volunteering and research programs can all be taken up by students at the University of Calgary.
Alberta Lethbridge University of Lethbridge The University of Lethbridge is committed to a multi-disciplinary education in which students can explore a wide range of arts and sciences in small classrooms. In 2017, Maclean’s magazine ranked the 50-year-old university third among Canada’s undergraduate schools.
Saskwatchewan Multiple campuses First Nations University of Canada First Nations is a unique institution that specializes in Indigenous knowledge and provides a culturally supportive environment. Here, Indigenous and non-Indigenous students alike can learn in an environment of First Nations cultures and values.
Saskwatchewan Multiple campuses Parkland College Parkland College serves the needs of adult learners and industry partners, and with five campuses, spreads itself across the province. The college aims to stimulate individual, community and economic growth. Small class sizes make learning a personal experience.
Saskwatchewan Multiple campuses Saskwatchewan Institute of Applied Science & Technology The philosophy behind Saskatchewan Polytechnic is to provide students with a variety of educational options mixed with hands-on practical experience.
Saskwatchewan Regina University of Regina The University of Regina aims to foster innovative learning, community engagement and influential research.
Saskwatchewan Saskatoon University of Saskatchewan This university is based in the heart of vibrant Saskatoon. Recently, the university signed a memorandum of understanding that creates opportunities for Aboriginal students.
Manitoba Multiple campuses Assiniboine Community College At ACC, instructors follow the philosophy of learning by doing; therefore classroom work is combined with labs, fieldwork, and the college’s sustainable greenhouse. There is also the opportunity after completing your two-year Diploma in Environmental Technologies at ACC to transfer to Brandon University and earn a BSc in Environmental Science or Geography after another two years.
Manitoba Brandon Brandon University Located in the city of Brandon and one hour south of Riding Mountain National Park, the university houses vibrant culture and green spaces. Students completing the Environmental Science Program are also eligible for the Environmental Professional Certification.
Manitoba Winnipeg Canadian Mennonite University A faith driven school, CMU provides the opportunity to study Earth processes with a focus on human-environmental interaction. Additionally, the CMU farm provides an opportunity to physically test and apply concepts studied within the classroom.
Manitoba Winnipeg University of Manitoba The University of Manitoba lies within the city of Winnipeg with access to park reserves and lakes. It is the largest post-secondary institution in Manitoba and has recently put a $15-million investment into an Arctic climate change laboratory as well as signing the Lake Friendly Accord, which aims to improve the water quality of Lake Winnipeg.
Manitoba Winnipeg University of Winnipeg The University of Winnipeg is located in downtown Winnipeg. Student-led organizations at the university also facilitate research placements with local non-profit agencies that work on environmental and social justice issues.
Ontario Multiple campuses Algoma University Algoma University is on the St. Mary’s River, which joins Lake Huron to Lake Superior. It is the smallest university in Ontario and seeks to further First Nations education and research.
Ontario Multiple campuses Algonquin College Algonquin was the first Canadian college to sign the Talloires Declaration, whose signatories pledge to advance the cause of sustainability in institutions of higher learning.The main campus is in Ottawa.
Ontario Multiple campuses Brock University Brock University is one of Canada’s medium-size institutions that excels in a high quality of teaching, which enhances the student experience, according to the Globe and Mail Canadian University Report. The main campus is located atop the Niagara Escarpment in Ontario’s Niagara peninsula, and is part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Ontario Multiple campuses Cambrian College Cambrian College is one of Northern Ontario’s leading postsecondary institutions and serves over 11,000 students at the campuses in Sudbury,, Little Current and Espanola. In 2012, it opened the doors to the Xstrata Nickel Sustainable Energy Centre, which is dedicated to conducting groundbreaking education and research in the field of sustainable energy.
Ontario Canadore Canadore College Canadore College possesses a beautiful campus located on a 260-hectare wooded escarpment overlooking the city of North Bay. This campus offers a unique Aboriginal Women in Trades program, which provides practical training in four key trade areas. The Parry Sound campus has an Ecotourism program.
Ontario Ottawa Carleton University Located in the nation’s capital, Carleton University offers strong teaching and researuch programs that prepare students for the professional world. Carleton also has an impressive student support network to help them in their educational career.
Ontario Multiple campuses Centennial College Established in 1966, Centennial College is Ontario’s first community college. It is home to the Centennial Energy Institute, which engages in developing training programs, workshops and applied research for the new energy economy.
Ontario Multiple campuses Confederation College In addition to its main campus in Thunder Bay, Confederation College has eight regional campuses to better serve its students. Along with its many campuses, the college boasts an inclusive learning environment with a significant Aboriginal student population.
Ontario Multiple campuses Durham College Durham College, only a short distance away from Toronto, offers the best of country and city living. The Whitby campus features a Centre For Food (CFF), which is home to a green, certified teaching restaurant and lounge, three public-viewing kitchens, two greenhouses, and numerous vegetable gardens and fruit-bearing trees.
Ontario Multiple campuses Fanshawe College Fanshawe’s School of Building Technology is a proud partner of the Canada Green Building Council and teaches green construction through material selection and construction methodology. In addition, faculty, students, and various community partners engage in numerous other green initiatives through Fanshawe’s Centre for Sustainable Energy and Environments.
Ontario Multiple campuses Fleming College As of 2013, Fleming College has had a sustainability office, whose mandate is to find ways in which the institution can promote and broadcast information on this topic. The office has undertaken numerous projects, such as the coordination of a Fleming College Farmers’ Market and an Intercampus Shuttle.
Ontario Multiple campuses Georgian College While at Georgian, students who are passionate about the environment will have the opportunity to join GEAR (Georgian Environmental Activism and Research). This student volunteer group works tirelessly to promote awareness and find answers to the numerous environmental issues that are plaguing the local community.
Ontario Multiple campuses Humber College Humber takes sustainability seriously, and as a result it has numerous green initiatives on campus. Some of the more prominent of these are its Sustainability Coordinating Committee, and the numerous departmental “Green Teams.”
Ontario Multiple campuses Lakehead University Just off the edge of Lake Superior, Lakehead University looks out to beautiful waters and the Isle Royale National Park. The Orillia campus is also one of the first in North America to be entirely built to LEED certification standards.
Ontario Sudbury Laurientian University Surrounded by lakes and next door to the Lake Laurentian Conservation Area, students at Laurentian University will not find it hard to find green spaces. Moreover, Laurentian has the highest post-graduation employment rates in Ontario: 93 percent after 6 months and 95 percent after two years.
Ontario Belleville Loyalist College Loyalist College has numerous on-campus initiatives aimed at reducing its carbon footprint. These include 20 hydration stations where students can fill their reusable water bottles, numerous recycling and compost bins, and their new battery recycling program that allows students to drop off their spent batteries.
Ontario Hamilton McMaster University On one side of McMaster University lies the city of Hamilton and on the other, an array of protected natural areas. The University is ranked among the top 100 universities in the world and prides itself on critical thinking and lifelong learning.
Ontario Multiple campuses Mohawk College Mohawk College is home to the Environmentally Committed Organization of Students (ECOS). This student volunteer group aims to promote sustainability amongst their peers by hosting awareness events, and working hand-in-hand with Mohawk’s Sustainability Office.
Ontario Niagara Falls Niagara College Niagara College has several sustainability initiatives. For example, there is a wind turbine, some geothermal heating, an outdoor classroom, and two carbon-neutral building projects.
Ontario North Bay Nipissing University Located on an escarpment that overlooks Lake Nipissing, the North Bay campus boasts many kilometres of trails, now connected to the Trans Canada Trail. The university prides itself in focusing on one student at a time so everyone can get the most out of their experience.
Ontario Multiple campuses Northern College Northern College offers a huge variety of learning options to fit everybody’s needs. Examples of this are the specialized Aboriginal learning initiatives, such as their Aboriginal entrepreneurship program, annual Indigenous week, visits to Northern communities and a week-long Aboriginal youth retreat.
Ontario Kingston Queen’s University One of Canada’s oldest degree-granting institutions, Queen’s University conducts leading-edge research in a variety of areas, including healthy environments and sustainable energy systems. With many students living within a 15-to-20-minute walk to campus, the school fosters a vibrant community feel.
Ontario Ancaster Redeemer University College A Christian liberal arts and science university, Redeemer University College offers courses in 30 different subject areas. Students can earn a Bachelor of Arts, Science or Education degree in one of 25 programs.
Ontario Toronto Ryerson University Ryerson is located in the heart of downtown Toronto. The Sustainability Matters program oversees environmental initiatives at the university, including their rooftop farm project.
Ontario Windsor St. Clair College Located in Canada’s “banana belt,” St. Clair College enjoys one of the country’s longest growing seasons. Students have the opportunity to study and care for a wide variety of exotic plants in their greenhouse. The college also houses a 40.5-hectare arboretum.
Ontario Multiple Campuses St. Lawrence College St. Lawrence College undertakes numerous sustainability initiatives, or “footprints” as they like to call them. Some examples of these are its Eco-Box program, which allows students to purchase reusable takeout containers for their on-campus meals, a coffee-cup recycling program, and their annual Urban Farm project at the Kingston and Brockville campuses.
Ontario Sault Ste. Marie Sault College Sault College is located between Lakes Huron and Superior. The college’s vision to operate in a student-centered way plays a key role in the economic development of its community.
Ontario Multiple Campuses Sheridan College In 2013, Sheridan College implemented its “Mission Zero” initiative, which features two major planks. The first of these is Sheridan’s Integrated Energy and Climate Master Plan (IECMP), which aims to cut Sheridan’s emissions in half by 2020. Along with this, the college has also implemented Zero Waste Sheridan (ZWS), which aims to make Sheridan College a zero waste campus by 2020.
Ontario Multiple Campuses Seneca College Seneca campuses open up a variety of choices for students, including different class sizes, online learning and part-time options in topic areas such as building, environment and sustainability, and renewable energy. The college also has partnerships with many industry leaders.
Ontario Peterborough Trent University Trent students are encouraged to take the Green Pledge, which encourages them think about social and environmental employment opportunities. There are a number of focus choices within environmental and Indigenous programs.
Ontario Guelph University of Guelph University of Guelph is consistently ranked as one of the top comprehensive universities in Canada by Maclean’s magazine. The City of Guelph itself is a nationally recognized leader in sustainability. The university offers study-abroad programs along with research opportunities and experiential learning.
Ontario Ottawa University of Ottawa One of the largest bilingual universities in North America, uOttawa offers a French-immersion option in 58 programs. However, Environmental Economics and Public Policy, and Aboriginal Studies are not bilingual.
Ontario Multiple campuses University of Toronto The University of Toronto consists of three campuses, one in the heart of downtown Toronto, and the other two in Mississauga and Scarborough. There is an Indigenous Studies program and the environmental programs offer a range of areas such as behaviour, energy, toxicology, physics, ethics, geoscience – the list goes on.
Ontario Waterloo University of Waterloo The University of Waterloo has an internationally recognized co-op program. Other experiential learning opportunities include field courses, international service learning trips, entrepreneurship programs like Velocity, and St. Paul’s GreenHouse (a social impact incubator, which started as an extra-curricular and can now be taken for credit).
Ontario London Western University Western’s main campus includes over 160 hectares of Gothic-style buildings mixed with modern LEED-certified structures. The university is also passionate about moving research out of the labs and into the lives of people around the world through public and private sector partnerships.
Ontario Windsor University of Windsor Right on the edge of the Canadian/American boundary, the University of Windsor looks out on to the beautiful Detroit River. This university takes a lot of pride in the great support network it provides its students.
Ontario Waterloo Wilfrid Laurier University Laurier’s sustainability office provides $20,000 in funding for student-lead sustainability initiatives. Students can join the EcoHawks group, which works toward lowering the school’s footprint.
Ontario Toronto York University York opened an Ecocampus in Costa Rica last year. It serves as an international hub for education and research about neotropical conservation, sustainable livelihoods, ecohealth and creating a biological corridor.
Quebec Sherbrooke Bishop’s University Surrounded by the Massawippi River, Bishop’s University focuses on providing a liberal education to its students. Environmental student groups work together to promote sustainability at Bishop’s and in the past have been involved with cleanups, composting projects and creating a community garden.
Quebec Montreal Concordia University Concordia University, with its main campus located in downtown Montreal, seeks to inspire its students to find innovative solutions and make positive contributions to society. A $400-million project to add green spaces to the downtown campus is currently underway.
Quebec Montreal McGill University Located in downtown Montreal, McGill University has been ranked 21st in the world, according to the QS World University Rankings 2014/15. The university’s Vision 2020 Sustainability Strategy aims to achieve the highest possible standard for sustainability on its campuses.
Quebec Montreal Université de Montréal Sitting beside the Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Park, this French-speaking university has Canada’s largest faculty of environment and design.
Quebec Quebec City Université Laval 58% of Université Laval’s research centres, chairs and institutes work in areas related to sustainable development issues. The university achieved carbon neutrality in 2015, becoming the first university in Quebec to do so.
Quebec Saguenay Université du Québec à Chicoutimi Université du Québec à Chicoutimi is surrounded by large nature reserves. Offerings include a bachelors in sustainable urbanization and a PhD in environmental science.
Quebec Montreal Université du Québec à Montréal This French-language university is located in the heart of Old Montreal. Masters or PhD in environment and science is available through their Institute of Science and Environment.
Quebec Trois-Rivières Université du Québec à Trois Rivières Midway between Montreal and Quebec, the university boasts a quiet environment with green spaces for its small student body. Despite its relaxed and informal environment, the university requests hard and dedicated work from its students.
Quebec Sherbrooke Université de Sherbrooke Université de Sherbrooke is a large French-speaking institution. The university lies close to Mt. Bellevue, which offers walking trails and skiing. In addition, there are a number of environmental activities that students can get involved with on campus.
Quebec Montreal Vanier College Located in Montreal, this English-speaking institution allows students to integrate sustainability into their education no matter their program.
New Brunswick Multiple campuses Collège communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick CCNB is a French-speaking institution with programs in environmental technology and renewable energy.
New Brunswick Fredericton New Brunswick Community College The college’s vision is to transform lives and communities and offers practical experience to its students to do so. In June 2015, the Robertson Institute for Community Leadership, which spans all CCNB campuses, won gold for Best Community Initiative in the Prix d’Excellence awards.
New Brunswick Fredericton Maritime College of Forest Technology MCFT has been training forest technologists for over 70 years. Students gain hands-on experience in the Kingsclear Woodlot, field laboratory and the Acadia Research Forest.
New Brunswick Sackville Mount Allison Mount Allison has been ranked Canada’s number-one undergraduate university by Maclean’s magazine many times. Mount A offers an abundance of majors and minors, allowing students the flexibility to create their own degrees.
New Brunswick Fredericton St. Thomas University St. Thomas University is located next to UNB, by the St. John River and the Odell Woods. The Environment and Society program is available as a major, or students can minor in environment through Interdisiplinary Studies.
New Brunswick Multiple campuses Université de Moncton This is Canada’s largest French-language university outside Quebec. A masters in environmental studies is available through uMoncton. The School of Forestry outside of Edmunston offers a masters in forestry.
New Brunswick Multiple campuses University of New Brunswick Founded in 1785, the University of New Brunswick is the oldest English-speaking educational institution in Canada. Their environment degrees are offered through either the Forestry and Environmental Management, or Science faculties.
Nova Scotia Wolfville Acadia University The research conducted at Acadia University involves the local community, giving students a unique opportunity to improve the areas where they live. Acadia has a low student-faculty ratio.
Nova Scotia Sydney Cape Breton University Cape Breton University has both the city life and the atmosphere of a small town. In small classes,undergrad courses engage in topics that connect sustainability, environment and community though an Indigenous lens.
